The Ottoman Empire was a long-lasting dynasty of Muslim rulers whose legacy is still holding strong. This superpower ruled huge areas in North Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. The main ruler of the Ottoman Empire was known as the Sultan. The empire lasted for more than six hundred years, approximately from 1299 to 1922. It only came to an end after the First World War.
The Start of the Ottoman Empire
The Ottoman Empire was founded by Osman I. The name Ottoman is believed to originate from Osman's name in Arabic- ‘Uthman’. The Ottoman Turks expanded their land and dynasty under the able leadership of Osman I, Orhan, Murad I, and Bayezid I.
Over the years, Sultan Mehmed made Istanbul the new capital of the Ottoman Empire. He also made it a popular international center for culture and trade. The Sultan created and implemented a uniform law and also encouraged various forms of literature and arts.
The End of the Ottoman Empire
Thirty-six rulers ruled the Ottoman Empire during the seven centuries. Historians still wonder as to how a single family of Islamic rulers survived the empire for such a long duration. The reason for this probably lies in the fact that they built their empire based on stability and strong centralization. However, since the beginning of the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire started losing its grip over Europe. Over the next hundred years, the empire also began to lose lands. Several countries got their independence from this empire in the eighteenth century.
The army of the Ottoman Empire joined the alliance of Central Powers and fought in World War I in 1914. They were defeated in 1918. Officially the Ottoman Empire came to an end in 1922. Turkey was declared as independent and republic on 29 October 1923.
The Ottoman rulers are still remembered for their encouragement of trade and literature. Ethnic diversity, military dominance, religious tolerance, artistic ventures, and of course architectural marvels were also much valued.
